Marble Polishing Process

Jan 09, 2026

Marble, internationally known as "cloud stone," is widely used in interior wall decoration due to its natural and rustic texture and bright and vibrant colors. However, due to its relatively porous and soft nature and high water absorption rate, and the presence of numerous fracture lines, it is prone to various types of pollution, warping, deformation, and loss of luster during processing, transportation, installation, and use, affecting the decorative effect. Therefore, marble maintenance is an essential part of the maintenance industry. Based on a comparative analysis of the condition of the marble surface, maintenance methods can be divided into:

Renovation and grinding treatment.

Local leveling treatment.

Cleaning and protection treatment.

Crystallization and polishing treatment.

Seamless filling treatment, etc.

Below, we will discuss the construction process of renovation and grinding treatment and crystallization and polishing treatment:

First, before renovation and grinding, waterproofing should be applied to minimize water absorption by the stone, thereby reducing its water absorption rate. Waterproofing should be applied again after 300# grinding, as the grinding process can reduce or eliminate the waterproofing effect. If possible, it is best to apply waterproofing again after 800# grinding.

For relatively porous stones, such as White Sand Beige, Sandstone, Tropical Rainforest, and Wood Grain Stone, a high-content sealing and hardening agent (such as ultra-hard inorganic coating, or organic silicone resin sealant with a content of over 40%) should be used for pre-treatment to fill the pores and harden the material.

Coarse grinding: Use 50#, 150#, 300#, and 500# diamond resin hard grinding blocks (do not use soft water grinding pads for coarse grinding, as this can cause waves and affect flatness). Use a slightly larger amount of water during coarse grinding, but remember not to use too much. After each grinding pad is finished, thoroughly absorb the water. Check whether the deep scratches left by the grinding material have been removed by the 50# grinding pad, and so on. The machine should move in a grid pattern during grinding. Coarse grinding accounts for 45% of the total grinding time and is a crucial step in ensuring the quality acceptance of the project. Fine Grinding: Using 800#, 1000#, and 2000# diamond resin soft water grinding pads, fine grinding accounts for 35% of the total grinding time. Initial gloss appears after grinding to 800#, and the gloss level reaches 50 degrees after grinding to 2000#.

Precision Grinding: Using 3000# diamond resin soft water grinding pads, spraying A2 abrasive, and performing ion exchange, precision grinding accounts for 20% of the total grinding time. After precision grinding, the gloss level is significantly improved, the surface density of the marble is increased, laying a solid foundation for the polishing agent (NO2+Q5 mirror repair agent), and enhancing the adhesion of the polishing materials.

Polishing: Using a crystal surface machine with a power of 2HP or more, a rotation speed of 175-210 revolutions per minute, and a weight of 45-70 kg, along with a polishing pad containing 70% animal hair, a 3M pad, and a nano pad, combined with marble mirror surface revitalizing cream NO2 and 2X mirror lock brightening emulsion Q5 for polishing and grinding. After polishing, the surface gloss of the marble can reach at least 90-100 degrees or more.

For difficult-to-polish stones, such as Carrara marble and resin-based artificial stone, if the above methods still don't produce a sufficiently bright finish, spray A2 again and grind with a 3000# pad until dry. Then repeat the polishing process using a nano pad, combined with marble mirror surface revitalizing cream NO2 and 2X mirror lock brightening emulsion Q5. The nano inorganic polymer copolymer forms a crystalline layer, appearing vitreous, and the bright, glossy effect will be achieved. It has high hardness, wear resistance, transparency, water resistance, stain resistance, and anti-slip properties.
